MY FIRST CAREER - ARABIC

From 2002 - 2008 for the U.S. Navy and 2008 - 2013 with Leidos, contracted to a federal intelligence agency. I learned to operate effectively in stressful situations (where lives were literally on the line) and dull ones (where the monotony was excruciating), all while maintaining a TS/SCI clearance and a high level (4+, 4) of Arabic proficiency.

Highlights:

  • A.A. in Arabic from the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA (2004)

  • Promoted to Petty Officer First Class (E-6), in charge of six juniors

  • Taught Arabic refresher courses (Basic through Advanced) to 90+ servicemembers from diverse backgrounds, education levels, and ranks, including from allied nations

  • Selected to adapt, develop policy for, and pilot a standalone Arabic grammar course, which I delivered to 30+ military personnel, improving annual Arabic testing scores

  • Served three months in Iraq as a civilian interpreter to support field officers and provide cultural insights

  • Special training in physical and cyber security, interpretation, adult learning

It’s hard to be an optimist and work in Middle Eastern affairs. I decided to move back to MN and go to college.
